Is there conflict in the game?

Yes, this game is about conflict. Unlike other many other LARPs this game is not about your faction vs another faction. At the lowest level it is about you making choices between your conflicting alliances and loyalties. If there are three people in a room, the ideal situation (according to B&B) is that A & B will stand against C on nationality, B & C will stand against A on religion and A & C will stand against B on social class. Your conflicts should be deep and complex.

An associated part is this: Conflict not murder. I could rant about this, but I feel like I already have – just don’t kill lightly, okay?

What are Game Masters?

GMs at Blackpowder & Bloodlines are identifiable by a particular cape (strictly speaking, a capelet). If you are talking to someone wearing one of these, assume you are out of character. You can treat us as little grounding points, if you need.

If you are talking to someone wearing one of these, assume you are out of character. You can treat us as little grounding points, if you need.

It should go without saying that we ask you not to wear anything that could be mistaken for one of these.

Your GMs this event are Katie, Dave, Brie, Gen, Sean, Josh, Reb, Jess, Lisa and Gareth.

We are a close knit team and in close communication with each other so don’t stress if you have to have the second half of a conversation with a different GM – they will either know what you are talking about or will find out very fast.

If you have a bond with a particular GM, I do encourage you to try and find them throughout the game, but if they are busy with someone else, please respect that. We are all your fans and are eager to help you.

What are trade tokens?

Our Trade Goods Tokens are little clay tablets that look a bit like chocolate. Please don’t try to eat them.

They are also a little more obscure than last year, on account of how the literal name of the Trade Token is not printed on them.

Is there mental or emotional first aid?

The keen eyed among you may have noticed that in Lisa’s post on safety she mentioned that the majority of the GMs are certified in both physical and emotional first aid. So what is emotional first aid?

Physical first aid is training to help someone stay alive until a professional arrives. Mental health first aid is the same thing, but for mental health issues rather than physical ones.

Blackpowder & Bloodlines is an intense experience. If your character dies or your friend suffers or you experience something that just messes you up, please come and talk to us!

We are not counsellors or psychologists, but we can look after you until one of those arrives.

What is ‘the blood’?

This is just a friendly reminder that if you chose to play a character with the Blood you are opting into a survival horror game. Your expected survival is significantly reduced because other Blooded characters are coming for you. As you well know, they are powerful and awful being.

Further, and far beyond that (and I am want to be very clear here) I will personally come for you with the dispassionate inevitability of one of Lovecraft’s Elder Gods.

Can we drink on site?

So this is a dry site. Strictly speaking that means no alcohol.

However what has been explained to us is that, in reality, is that what we need to do is leave no evidence of alcohol. So, if you are drinking, you have to decant it into a period-looking vessel rather than drinking from the bottle.

I feel like that’s pretty straightforward – the park rangers said to have a decorum/non-farb/legit/period/larp-looking drinking vessel.

Who is making the food?

Our chef is named Jaq is she is a superhero.

NPCs, you are all doing a kitchen shift. Be honoured that we are letting you serve with her.

What is the difference between a medicine token and a medicine kit?

Some of our doctors are bringing their own medicine kits. Your medicine kit is awesome. We want you to use it because it is amazing!

That said Medicine Tokens are a game token and need to be held by a character in order to be able to heal other characters. If you have your own kit, please just tuck the Token into your own kit so that it may be seen and we’re all happy.

Can you get me any more excited about this event than I already am?

Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles.

What is a Sun or Silver Guard?

A(n alegorical) thousand  years ago, the Sun and Silver Guards were people who made a little sacrifice to not take part in religious ceremonies so that they could stand guard over the Matrial and Patronic rituals. These guys wanted to keep the congregations safe and decided to give away their participation in the ceremonies to make that happen.

Over time, this has changed and corrupted . The Sun and Silver guard have changed due to the weak souls/wills of humanity to be a person who has willingly accepted the damnation their soul for murder in order to give protection/vengeance to the congregation.

These days, the Sun Guard is the elite unit of the Matrial army. The Silver Guard work as the secret police of the Patronic church. Both wear an empty string around their necks as an open symbol of their willingness to murder in the name of their God.

Can I rejoin a faith after being excommunicated?

This is actually not too hard. From a mechanical point of view, all it takes is a priest in good standing with the church to “re-baptise” you (that word is going to vary from denomination to denomination).

The problem is that the Priest must abide by the rules of the church to be able to do this and the Patronic church has said no Charlestonians and no Padricians.

How long after using the blood must you keep the physical signs on your face?

You can wipe it off straight after the power fades.

Is there drinking water readily available?

Yes.

How much fiction can we add to the world and how much should be run past a gm?

This is a great question and it would take an essay to answer properly. I don’t have time for that (this year), so let me explain… No, there is too much. Let me sum up. This is a collaborative world and it would be impractical (and dull and shallow) for only GMs to have the ability to write mythos, so go for it. That said, there are certain facts that exist in the game that you won’t be able to overwrite. That said, information in this world is reasonably unreliable and your GMs aren’t in the habit of correcting people who are misinformed (it is better that way). So make up whatever you want, but be prepared to be wrong.
